LG Electronics new CEO vows to ramp up investment

The new chief executive of South Korea's LG Electronics took the reins on Friday vowing to boost investment to make the company more competitive and become a market leader.

Koo Bon-Joon, 59, replaced Nam Yong who quit three weeks ago to take responsibility for the company's loss-making handset business.

LG's mobile business posted a record loss in the second quarter due to its slow response to the booming smartphone market. Prices of its traditional phones fell sharply as customers turned to smartphones instead.

"I will strengthen future investments with a long-term perspective," Koo said in a statement.

"If we reduce investment during the hard times, the future will become even more difficult."

Koo has served as executive officer at several subsidiaries of LG, which is headed by his brother Koo Bon-Moo. Both are members of the group's founding family.
