AFP - the human rights group, Amnesty International on Wednesday accused Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara of closing its deadly attacks on supporters of former leader Laurent Gbagbo eyes.
According to a report published by the London-based group, reprisal atrocities are still being committed against supporters of Gbagbo, six weeks after Ouattara earned in power with the promise of reconciliation after a bloody conflict.
"The human rights violations are still being committed against supporters of Laurent Gbagbo in Abidjan and in the West of the country, real or perceived", said Gaetan Mootoo, Amnesty International West Africa researcher.
He argued "omission of Alassane Ouattara to condemn these acts could be regarded as a green light by many of its security forces and other armed elements of fighting with them to continue,".
"Alassane Ouattara must publicly state that all violence against the civilian population must stop immediately," demanded Mootoo.
Ouattara took the oath of office on May 6, almost a month after bitter political rival Gbagbo was captured after he refused to relinquish power after a presidential election in November.
A battle of long months pitted Ouattara against Gbagbo, who had refused to leave his duties after his rival was declared winner of the election.
Almost 3,000 people died in the violence, according to the new Government, and tens of thousands have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
Gbagbo was captured in a bunker underground in Abidjan on 11 April by forces loyal to Ouattara, supported by the France and the United Nations.
