Beach time: Sand delivered for Olympic test event (AP)

LONDON – Truckloads of sand have been delivered to Horse Guards Parade in central London for a beach volleyball Olympic test event.

More than 2,200 tons of sand was transported to the iconic venue on Thursday by 120 trucks from a quarry in Surrey, south of London.

The sand will be used to fill one competition court, two warm-up courts and two training courts for a FIVB international event scheduled for Aug. 9-14.

The tournament, featuring 24 teams, is part of a series of test events ahead of next year’s London Olympics.

The beach volleyball venue will be one of the most iconic competition sites of the games. Horse Guards Parade hosts the annual Trooping the Color ceremony and is close to the British prime minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street.
