Life-Saving Medication Supply Shortages Concern Hospitals (ContributorNetwork)

Health care consumers of all ages have the potential to be affected by important drug shortages being experienced by hospitals and other health care providers.

You never know when you, or someone about whom you care, may be in need for cardiac arrest medications or other critically needed medications and it turns out the cupboard is bare. Associated Press reporter Lauren Neergaard quotes Dr. Eric Lavonas of the American College of Emergency Physicians as saying, “It’s just a matter of time now before we call for a drug that we need to save a patient’s life and we find out there isn’t any,” in an article published today.

Shortages of medications, especially injectable medications, isn’t new, but it is continuing. 2010 saw a record number of 211 medications being in scarce supply. In the first quarter of this year, 89 drugs made the list of shortages. The United States is not alone in this concern; nations from around the world are also reporting shortages of important medications.
