Kaspersky Lab patents advanced technology for combating malware epidemics

Kaspersky Lab has patented a groundbreaking piece of technology in the USA that allows the potential scale of malware epidemics to be accurately predicted in order to prevent them from spreading.

Today's malware has the capacity to spread like wildfire, with millions of computers infected in an instant as an epidemic sweeps across the Internet. This can take down huge swathes of infrastructure, bringing information highways to a standstill and leaving systems vulnerable to data leakage which in turn opens the door to large scale fraud. Detecting malware on every computer that is infected during an epidemic has little or no effect. What is needed is a reliable method for estimating the potential scale and direction of an epidemic, an early warning system, and that is exactly what the new technology developed by Kaspersky Lab's Yury Mashevsky, Yury Namestnikov, Nikolay Denishchenko and Pavel Zelensky, is capable of doing. The technology was granted Patent No. 7743419 by the US Patent and Trademark Office on 22 June, 2010.

Microsoft on Tuesday denounced Yahoo! Japan's Internet search alliance with Google, saying it would give Google near-total control over the third-largest market for search queries in the world.

"Google's plan would cement its position as essentially the sole provider of search results in Japan for years to come," Microsoft vice president and deputy general counsel Dave Heiner said in a blog post.

"The proposed deal will eliminate search competition in Japan -- in paid advertising and natural search results," Heiner said.

The agreement calls for Yahoo! Japan to switch to Google's search engine this year from the Yahoo! Inc. technology currently used and deploy Google's online advertising and distribution system.

From Avatar to Aviation

Anyone who saw the recent box-office hit "Avatar" would have been captivated by the movie's breathtaking 3D animation.

Avatar was created using the latest in film-making technology - innovative 3D filming that has set a new standard for high-tech movies. Not only did this technology create a whole new world in Avatar the movie, but it also represented the emergence of a whole new world in the film-making industry.

It never ceases to amaze me how technology can shape and revolutionise so many facets of life. Technology is changing the way that many of us communicate and socialise, through the evolution of mobile devices and social-networking sites. Technology is also changing the way that we do business and the way that many industries operate. One such example is the aviation industry.

Automated blood-test system saves time

Major hospital and private technology firm collaborate

A local technology company has created a system that automates much of the procedure involved in blood-testing services at large city hospitals, reducing substantially the need for patients to wait in time-consuming queues.

The system is operating at Bangkok's King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, where blood tests are normally made on about 160,000 people per year. Instead of spending hours waiting for the blood-testing procedure, patients are these days in and out in only 20 minutes - even during rush hours.

Digital-content industry on the boil

Local information-technology companies have gathered together to set up the Digital Content Association of Thailand, with the aim of generating income from international markets for locally produced digital content.

The new organisation's president, Wiwat Wongwarawipat, said the association aimed to attract membership from local digital-content producers who were interested in creating material of international standard and serving global markets.

He said digital content could be divided into four areas: games, movies, music and e-books. The digital-content market is in the throes of dynamic change and crucial growth, following widespread access to new technology and changing customer-behaviour patterns, in which they are now actively accessing and using information from digital networks.

"I think there is a big opportunity for Thai digital-content producers to promote their products and provide digital content to global markets, because local producers have various strong points, such as quality and imagination, that will allow then to meet market demand," Wiwat said.
